Can you wild camp in the peak district?

Updated: Aug 17, 2020

The big question, Can you wild camp in the Peak District?

Due to cover and travel restrictions you will notice that more and more people are staying in the UK for their holidays therefore wild camping will be more popular.

However the big question is, CAN YOU WILD PEAK IN THE PEAK DISTRICT?

Now wild camping in places like the Peak District isnt exactly Legal, okay let me rephrase that. It is not legal. The land is public freeway yes, but its all privately owned meaning technical you have to get permission to camp on it. However there are ways around this, and the rules are quite simple.

  1. Make sure you camp at least 1 hour trek from where you park (don't be silly and camp near the car park)

  2. Only camp with what you can carry on your back

  3. Be aware of fires more so in the summer they recommend no stove or smoking - be aware if you use a camping stove.

  4. Arrive late at night and leave early in the morning - we always leave 6.30am

  5. Pick a discrete place to camp - again goes without saying don't camp near public pathways

  6. Like I mentioned earlier be careful of fires especially when its hot as the gorse on the moors can easily set fire and in the winter be mindful of bogs.

  7. Dig a hole if you need to do your business and reminder to take any used tissues home in to the bin.

And please TAKE YOUR RUBBISH HOME WITH YOU! Leave the place as you found it.

It was a sad sight seeing so many bottles and rubbish in the Peak District from irresponsible people. It is what ruins it for the rest of us.

If you do wild camping the right way it can be really enjoyable, especially if you are into photography.

WHERE TO CAMP?

We always say the best camping spots are the ones you find and for us its the highlight of the trip.

However for people who are new to the peak district we have some top spots for you

  1. Bamford edge ( it is one of the shorter walks but it is steep so bare that in mind ) but with great views over Ladybower this is a popular place and on weekends in the summer you will also spot 10 or so more campers with you.

  2. Mermaids Pool - A little more of a walk but with beautiful sites this again can be popular in the summer

  3. Kinderdownfall - for the most beautiful views

Let us know if you have any favourite wild camping spots in the Peak district but mostly just have fun!
